In the seminal drawbridge study, 3.5-month-old infants were habituated to a drawbridge rotating 180°. A solid box was then placed behind the drawbridge. Infants were shown two events: a possible event (the drawbridge stops when it reaches the box) and an impossible event (the drawbridge rotates through the space where the box was — appearing to pass through the solid object). Infants looked significantly longer at the impossible event — indicating they expected the box to impede the drawbridge even though it was no longer visible. At 3.5 months, infants already represented the hidden box and expected it to have physical effects.

Subsequent studies found object permanence evidence as young as 3.5 months — approximately 5 months earlier than Piaget claimed — using car-and-track, cup-and-object, and occlusion paradigms.
