A database is an organised, structured collection of data stored and accessed electronically — designed so that information can be retrieved, updated, and analysed efficiently and accurately. Databases are the foundational infrastructure of modern business information systems: every customer record, transaction, inventory item, employee file, and operational log must be stored somewhere, and the quality of the database system determines how quickly and reliably that information can be accessed and used. Without effective database management, data analytics (examined in the data analytics section) has no reliable foundation from which to operate.
Types of business databases
Customer databases store information about existing and potential customers — contact details, purchase history, communication preferences, support interactions, and contract terms. A well-maintained customer database enables personalised marketing, targeted retention programmes, and informed account management. Operational databases record the activities of the business in real time — delivery logs, production records, inventory movements, vehicle sensor readings, and transaction histories. Database management and data integrity
The value of a database depends entirely on the accuracy, completeness, and currency of the data it contains — collectively referred to as data integrity.
