Primary market research involves the collection of original data gathered specifically for the current research purpose. Unlike secondary research — which uses data collected for other purposes — primary research is tailored to the exact questions the business needs to answer. It is therefore more directly relevant but typically more expensive and time-consuming to collect. Several distinct methods are used, each with its own strengths and limitations, making the choice of method as important as the decision to conduct research at all.
Surveys
A survey is a structured set of questions administered to a sample of respondents, either in written form (paper or online questionnaire) or verbally. Surveys are the most widely used primary research method because they can reach large numbers of respondents relatively cheaply — particularly through online platforms — and because the structured format makes responses quantifiable and directly comparable.
Surveys are most effective for collecting factual information (purchase frequency, price sensitivity, demographic data) and for measuring attitudes on a scale. Their limitations include: response bias (respondents may give socially desirable or untrue answers); question design bias (leading questions or ambiguous wording produces unreliable data); low response rates (particularly for unsolicited surveys); and the inability to probe for deeper explanation behind a quantitative response.
Interviews
An interview is a structured or semi-structured conversation between a researcher and a respondent, conducted in person, by telephone, or via video call. Interviews allow the researcher to probe responses in depth — following up on interesting answers, clarifying ambiguous responses, and exploring motivations that a questionnaire cannot capture. They are particularly valuable for understanding why customers behave as they do, rather than simply recording what they do.
The limitations of interviews include high cost per respondent (limiting sample sizes), the potential for interviewer bias (the interviewer's tone, appearance, or response to answers may influence respondents), and the time required for both conducting and analysing the conversations.
Focus groups
A focus group is a moderated discussion among a small group of participants (typically 6–10), exploring attitudes, perceptions, and reactions to a product, concept, or marketing message. The group dynamic is the distinguishing feature: participants respond to each other's contributions, building on and challenging one another's views in a way that individual interviews cannot replicate. Focus groups are particularly valuable for exploring emotional responses, generating new ideas, and testing creative concepts at an early stage.
Their limitations include small sample sizes (typically 6–10 participants per group), the risk of group dynamics distorting individual views (dominant participants can suppress dissenting opinions), and the subjective nature of the qualitative output, which requires skilled interpretation.
Observation
Observation involves recording consumer behaviour directly, without asking questions — for example, tracking how customers move through a retail store, what products they pick up, and how long they spend in different sections. It captures actual behaviour rather than reported behaviour, avoiding the gap between what people say they do and what they actually do. Mystery shopping — where researchers pose as customers to assess service quality — is a common form of observation in retail and hospitality.
Limitations include the inability to observe motivations and attitudes (only behaviour is visible), the cost of staffing observation exercises, and the potential for reactivity — customers may behave differently if they know they are being observed.
Product trials
A product trial (or test market) involves launching a product in a limited geographic area or to a sample group before full national or international roll-out. It provides real-world data on sales performance, customer response, and operational feasibility under actual market conditions — a significant advantage over research conducted in controlled or artificial settings.
Limitations include cost (a trial still requires production, distribution, and marketing investment); competitive intelligence risk (competitors can observe the trial and prepare a response before the full launch); and the possibility that the trial area is not representative of the full target market.
