Why Quality Matters
Quality in business means producing goods or delivering services that consistently meet or exceed customer expectations. It does not necessarily mean "the best possible" - a budget product can be of high quality if it reliably does what it promises at the price customers expect to pay. What matters is that the product is fit for purpose and meets the standard the customer has been led to expect.
Quality matters for two interconnected reasons. First, it controls costs: defective products must be scrapped, reworked, or replaced, and customer complaints generate returns, refunds, and reputational damage - all of which are expensive. Quality Control vs Quality Assurance

Quality control (QC) is a system in which finished products (or products at specific stages of production) are inspected and tested. Items that fail to meet the required standard are rejected, reworked, or scrapped before they reach the customer. Quality control is a reactive approach - it catches defects after they have occurred.
Advantages: Ensures defective products do not reach customers; straightforward to implement; suitable for high-volume standardised production where some level of defects is expected and statistically manageable.
Disadvantages: Does not prevent defects from occurring - it only catches them. Scrapping or reworking defective products wastes materials, time, and money. Inspection is an added cost that adds no value to the product itself. High defect rates reflect underlying production problems that QC alone does not solve.
Quality assurance (QA) is a system in which quality is built into every stage of the production process. Rather than inspecting for defects at the end, the aim is to ensure that defects cannot occur in the first place - through careful process design, staff training, supplier standards, and continuous monitoring throughout production. Quality assurance is a proactive approach.
Advantages: Prevents defects rather than simply detecting them, reducing waste and rework costs. Every employee is responsible for quality, not just a separate inspection team. Leads to a culture of continuous improvement and builds long-term quality reputation. Can reduce the need for expensive end-of-line inspection.
Disadvantages: Requires significant upfront investment in training, process design, and monitoring systems. Cultural change can be difficult to achieve - every worker must genuinely take ownership of quality. More complex to implement than a simple end-of-line check.
Quality, Costs and Competitive Advantage
The relationship between quality, costs, and competitive advantage is not straightforward:
- Poor quality increases costs: Defective products must be scrapped or reworked; customer complaints generate returns and refunds; warranty claims add cost; reputational damage reduces future sales. These "cost of poor quality" items can be substantial and are often underestimated.
