Types of Computer Network

Computer networks are classified partly by the geographical area they cover and partly by who owns and controls them. The three types you need to know are the Personal Area Network (PAN), the Local Area Network (LAN), and the Wide Area Network (WAN). Each exists to meet different connectivity needs at different scales.

PAN, LAN and WAN in Detail

Personal Area Network (PAN)

A Personal Area Network (PAN) is a very short-range network connecting devices in the immediate personal space of one individual - typically within a few metres. At GCSE level, the only technology you need to know for PANs is Bluetooth. Bluetooth uses short-range radio signals to connect devices without cables.

Typical examples: connecting a smartphone to wireless earbuds, a smartwatch, a Bluetooth keyboard, or a wireless speaker. A student's phone connected to their headphones is a PAN.

Local Area Network (LAN)

A Local Area Network (LAN) connects devices within a relatively small geographical area - typically a single building or site such as a school, office, or home. LANs are usually owned, controlled, and managed by a single person or organisation. The organisation that owns the LAN decides what equipment is used, who can connect, and how the network is configured.

Typical examples: a school network connecting all computers and shared printers; a home network connecting laptops, phones, and a smart TV; an office network serving all employees in one building.

Wide Area Network (WAN)

A Wide Area Network (WAN) connects devices and networks across a wide geographical area - spanning cities, countries, or even continents. The most well-known example of a WAN is the internet, which connects billions of devices worldwide. Unlike a LAN, a WAN is typically not owned by a single person or organisation; instead, it is under collective or distributed ownership, with different organisations owning different parts of the infrastructure.

Typical examples: the internet (the largest WAN); a bank's private network connecting branches in different countries; a multinational company's internal network spanning multiple continents.
