Observational Techniques

Observational research involves systematically watching and recording behaviour as it naturally occurs, without manipulating variables. It is particularly valuable for studying behaviour that cannot be ethically or practically manipulated experimentally, for generating hypotheses about naturally occurring patterns, and for achieving high ecological validity. Observations can be conducted in different settings and with different levels of researcher involvement.

Naturalistic Observation

In a naturalistic observation, the researcher observes behaviour in its natural setting without any intervention or manipulation. The participants are in their typical environment — a classroom, playground, street, or workplace — and the researcher records behaviour without interfering. Participants may or may not be aware they are being observed.

Strengths: high ecological validity — behaviour is observed as it naturally occurs, uninfluenced by an artificial research setting. Provides rich data on naturally occurring behaviour patterns. Useful for studying behaviour that cannot be manipulated. Weaknesses: no control over extraneous variables — the researcher cannot control what happens in the natural environment. Cause-and-effect conclusions cannot be drawn. Observer bias may affect what is noticed and recorded. If participants are unaware of being observed, ethical issues arise regarding informed consent.

Controlled Observation

In a controlled observation, the researcher controls aspects of the environment in which the observation takes place — typically in a laboratory or structured setting — whilst still observing rather than manipulating a specific IV. Ainsworth's Strange Situation is a well-known example: the environment (a research room with scripted episodes) was controlled, and behaviour (attachment patterns) was observed and coded. Controlled observations allow more systematic data collection and greater replication than naturalistic observations.

Strengths: more replicable than naturalistic observations; greater control over what situations are presented. Weaknesses: lower ecological validity than naturalistic observation; behaviour may be influenced by the artificial setting.

Covert and Overt Observation

In covert observation, participants are unaware they are being observed. This reduces demand characteristics but raises ethical concerns about consent and privacy. In overt observation, participants know they are being observed. This is ethically preferable but may produce reactivity — participants alter their behaviour because they know they are watched (the observer effect).

Participant and Non-Participant Observation

In participant observation, the researcher joins the group being studied, sometimes concealing their research role (covert participant observation). This can provide rich insider insight. In non-participant observation, the researcher watches from outside the group. Participant observation risks observer bias — the researcher's involvement may affect their objectivity — and loss of scientific detachment.

Structured and Unstructured Observation

Structured observation uses pre-defined behavioural categories and a coding system to record specific, pre-specified behaviours. This produces quantitative data that can be statistically analysed and allows inter-rater reliability to be assessed. Unstructured observation involves open-ended recording of anything that seems relevant — producing rich qualitative data but making systematic comparison and statistical analysis difficult.
