The Behavioural Explanation of Phobias: The Two-Process Model
The behavioural approach to explaining phobias proposes that phobias are learned responses — not biologically inevitable or cognitively driven, but acquired through conditioning experiences. The most influential behavioural account is Mowrer's (1960) two-process model, which combines classical conditioning to explain how phobias are acquired and operant conditioning to explain how they are maintained.
Acquisition: Classical Conditioning
Classical conditioning, originally described by Pavlov, involves learning through association. In the context of phobia acquisition, a neutral stimulus (NS) becomes associated with a naturally fear-producing unconditioned stimulus (UCS), resulting in the neutral stimulus acquiring the ability to elicit fear on its own.
The classic demonstration is Watson and Rayner's (1920) Little Albert study. Watson and Rayner conditioned a fear response in an 11-month-old infant, Albert. Initially, a white rat (NS) produced no fear response. A loud noise (UCS) naturally produced distress (UCR). By repeatedly presenting the rat alongside the loud noise, Watson and Rayner caused Albert to associate the rat with the noise. Subsequently, the rat alone produced a fear response (now a CR) — Albert had acquired a conditioned fear of the white rat. This fear also generalised to other white, fluffy objects, demonstrating stimulus generalisation.
In real-world phobia acquisition, a person might develop a dog phobia following a painful bite (the bite is the UCS; pain/fear is the UCR; the dog, previously a NS, becomes the CS eliciting fear CR). A single traumatic encounter can be sufficient for conditioning if the UCS is intense enough.
Maintenance: Operant Conditioning
Classical conditioning explains how a phobia is acquired but not why it persists long after the original conditioning event. Many phobias persist for years or decades despite no further aversive encounters with the feared stimulus. Mowrer's second process — operant conditioning — provides this explanation.
When a phobic individual encounters the feared stimulus (CS), they experience conditioned fear (CR). Avoiding the stimulus removes this fear, which constitutes negative reinforcement: the removal of an aversive state reinforces the behaviour that preceded it (avoidance). Because avoidance is reinforced, it becomes more likely in future — and because avoidance prevents exposure to the feared stimulus, the conditioned fear response can never extinguish. The phobia is thereby maintained indefinitely through the negative reinforcement of avoidance.
Evaluation
The two-process model offers a parsimonious, empirically grounded account of phobia acquisition and maintenance. The Little Albert study provides a direct experimental demonstration of phobia conditioning, and the operant maintenance mechanism is consistent with clinical observations that avoidance perpetuates phobias. The model also generates effective treatments: if avoidance maintains the phobia through negative reinforcement, then preventing avoidance and allowing extinction (as in systematic desensitisation and flooding) should be therapeutic — and clinical evidence supports this.
However, several observations challenge or qualify the model. Not everyone who experiences a traumatic encounter with a stimulus develops a phobia — individual differences in conditioning susceptibility are not accounted for. Some phobias (e.g. snake phobias) are much more common than others (e.g. electric socket phobias), despite the fact that in modern life electric sockets are more commonly encountered and associated with shocks. Seligman (1971) proposed the concept of biological preparedness to account for this: humans are evolutionarily prepared to acquire fears to stimuli that were genuinely dangerous in the environment of evolutionary adaptation (snakes, spiders, heights, strangers), meaning conditioning to such stimuli occurs more readily and is more resistant to extinction. This hybrid account incorporates both conditioning and evolutionary biology.
