The question of whether human behaviour, personality, and psychological characteristics are primarily the product of innate biological factors (nature) or of environmental experience and social context (nurture) is one of the oldest and most consequential in psychology. The Interactionist Position

The diathesis-stress model proposes that many psychological conditions arise from an interaction between a genetic or biological vulnerability (diathesis) and environmental stressors. A person with high genetic vulnerability to schizophrenia (e.g. a first-degree relative with the disorder) will only develop schizophrenia if exposed to sufficient environmental stress — the diathesis alone is insufficient. This model applies across many conditions: depression, PTSD, addiction, eating disorders.
