Gender Differences in Stress
Men and women show consistent differences in the types of situations they find most stressful, the physiological and behavioural responses they mount, and the coping strategies they favour. These differences have both biological and social explanations — and understanding them has implications for clinical assessment and intervention.
Sources of Stress: Differences by Gender
Research consistently finds that women report higher levels of stress related to interpersonal and relationship events (conflict with significant others, family difficulties, bereavement) whilst men more often report occupational and financial stressors as primary stress sources. Kiecolt-Glaser et al. demonstrated in various studies that women show stronger physiological responses (cortisol, immune changes) to interpersonal stressors (marital conflict, social rejection) than men, whilst men may respond more strongly to achievement and competitive stressors. However, both genders are affected by all types of stressors — these are statistical tendencies, not absolute distinctions.
The Tend-and-Befriend Response (Taylor et al., 2000)
The dominant model of the stress response — fight-or-flight — was largely derived from research on male animals and human male participants. Taylor et al. (2000) challenged this as an incomplete account by proposing that females, under stress, may preferentially engage in a tend-and-befriend response rather than fight-or-flight:
- Tending: nurturing and protecting offspring and significant others during stress — reducing their distress and maintaining a safe environment.
- Befriending: creating and maintaining social networks for mutual support under stress — seeking social contact and affiliating with others.
Taylor et al. proposed a biological mechanism: under stress, females may release more oxytocin — a neuropeptide involved in social bonding, trust, and affiliation — which promotes approach rather than avoidance behaviour. In males, high testosterone may reduce the effects of oxytocin and amplify the fight-or-flight response. In females, oestrogen may enhance oxytocin's effects, promoting affiliation. The tend-and-befriend response may be evolutionarily adaptive for females: offspring survival in the EEA was dependent on maternal protection and social network maintenance, which would have been better served by affiliation than by fight-or-flight.
Biological vs Social Explanations
Gender differences in stress responses are explained by both biological and social factors. Biological: hormonal differences (testosterone, oestrogen, oxytocin) produce different stress response tendencies. Oestrogen may provide some protection against cardiovascular stress reactivity — explaining why pre-menopausal women have lower rates of CHD than men of the same age, despite similar or higher perceived stress. Social/cultural: gender role socialisation produces different coping repertoires. Women are typically socialised to be more expressive, communal, and relationship-focused — consistent with tend-and-befriend. Men are socialised to be self-reliant and emotionally restrained — consistent with fight-or-flight and independent coping. Both biology and socialisation contribute — the two are difficult to disentangle because they co-vary (females are raised with female hormones; males with male hormones).
Evaluation
The tend-and-befriend theory is an important corrective to male-centred stress research. Limitations: the original theory was based largely on a review of the literature rather than prospective experimental testing. The assumption that gender differences in stress responses are biologically based risks underemphasising socialisation. Individual variation within genders is substantial — many men affiliate and seek support under stress; many women engage in problem-solving and fight-or-flight responses. The gender difference in stress response style may be contextual and situational rather than a fixed individual difference.
