The Behaviourist Approach: Classical Conditioning
The behaviourist approach emerged in the early twentieth century as a radical reaction against the subjectivity of introspection. Its central claim is that psychology should concern itself exclusively with observable behaviour rather than internal mental states, which behaviourists regarded as unscientific and inaccessible. The approach proposes that all behaviour is learned through experience — specifically through interactions with the environment — and that the same basic learning principles apply to all species. Classical conditioning is the first and most fundamental of these learning processes.
Watson and the Behaviourist Manifesto
John B. Watson (1913) published his landmark paper Psychology as the Behaviourist Views It, which is often called the behaviourist manifesto. Watson argued that psychology should abandon the study of consciousness and mental processes entirely and restrict itself to the objective study of behaviour. He proposed that the goal of psychology should be the prediction and control of behaviour — a thoroughly scientific objective achievable without reference to subjective experience. Watson famously claimed he could take any healthy infant and, given control of their environment, train them to become any type of specialist, regardless of their natural endowment — a dramatic statement of the behaviourist commitment to environmental determinism.
Pavlov and Classical Conditioning
Ivan Pavlov (1849–1936), a Russian physiologist, made the foundational discovery of classical conditioning whilst studying digestion in dogs. He noticed that dogs began to salivate not only when food was placed in their mouths, but in anticipation — at the sight of the food bowl, the white coat of the laboratory assistant, or even the sound of approaching footsteps. He systematically investigated this phenomenon, which he termed conditioned reflexes.
The classical conditioning model involves the following sequence. Before conditioning, food (the unconditioned stimulus, UCS) automatically produces salivation (the unconditioned response, UCR) — a natural, unlearned reflex. A neutral stimulus (NS) such as a bell produces no salivation. During conditioning, the bell (NS) is repeatedly presented immediately before or alongside food (UCS). After sufficient pairings, the bell alone elicits salivation — it has become a conditioned stimulus (CS) producing a conditioned response (CR) of salivation. The CR typically resembles but is slightly weaker than the UCR.
Pavlov also described several important principles: extinction (if the CS is repeatedly presented without the UCS, the CR gradually weakens and disappears); spontaneous recovery (an extinguished CR can reappear after a rest period); stimulus generalisation (similar stimuli to the CS also elicit the CR); and stimulus discrimination (the organism learns to respond only to the specific CS, not to similar stimuli, through differential conditioning).
Watson and Rayner: The Little Albert Study
Watson and Rayner (1920) demonstrated that classical conditioning could produce fear responses in humans. They conditioned an 11-month-old infant (Albert) to fear a white rat by pairing the rat with a loud noise, and showed that the fear generalised to other white, fluffy objects. This demonstrated that phobias and emotional responses could be acquired through conditioning — directly applying Pavlov's animal research to human psychology.
Evaluation
Classical conditioning has enormous empirical support from animal and human research and has been applied productively to explain and treat phobias, taste aversions, and advertising effectiveness. Pavlov's experiments were conducted under highly controlled laboratory conditions with precise measurement, exemplifying the scientific rigour behaviourism aspired to. However, the approach has been criticised for reducing behaviour to simple stimulus-response associations, ignoring cognitive processes, and being unable to explain complex human behaviours involving language, reasoning, and voluntary action. The behaviourist exclusion of mental processes is now widely considered an overcorrection that limited rather than advanced psychology.
