Gender Schema Theory (Martin and Halverson)
Carol Martin and Charles Halverson (1981, 1983) proposed gender schema theory as an information-processing account of gender development that directly addresses the key weakness in Kohlberg's cognitive-developmental theory: the fact that children display gender-typed behaviour well before they achieve gender constancy. Gender schema theory argues that gender schemas — organised cognitive structures encoding knowledge about what is associated with each gender — form from approximately age 2–3 and are sufficient to drive gender-typed behaviour without requiring constancy.
What is a Schema?
A schema is a cognitive framework or organised knowledge structure that guides the processing of incoming information. Schemas influence what we notice, how we interpret ambiguous information, and what we remember. They operate largely automatically, filtering and organising information in ways consistent with pre-existing knowledge.
The Two-Schema System
Martin and Halverson proposed that children develop two interconnected gender schemas:
1. The in-group/out-group schema (also called the superordinate schema): a broad, general framework encoding which activities, objects, and attributes are culturally associated with boys versus girls. This schema answers the question: 'Is this for boys or for girls in general?' It is relatively simple and is the first to develop. A child knows that trucks are 'for boys' and dolls are 'for girls' at this level without necessarily having detailed knowledge of either.
2. The own-sex schema: a more detailed, elaborated schema encoding knowledge specifically about what is appropriate and typical for one's own gender. This answers the question: 'How do I, as a boy/girl, do and engage with the things associated with my gender?' The own-sex schema is the more directly behaviour-guiding structure — it is richer and more detailed for in-group than out-group activities.
Children use the in-group/out-group schema first to classify new information: 'Is this for boys or girls?' If the answer is 'for my gender,' the child then engages the own-sex schema and pays close attention, exploring, practising, and learning in detail. If the answer is 'for the other gender,' the child disengages, attends less, and processes the information minimally. This asymmetric processing produces gender-typed behaviour without requiring any external reinforcement.
Schemas and Memory: The Distortion Effect
A striking prediction of schema theory is that schema-inconsistent information should be distorted in memory — the mind assimilates incongruent information into existing schema structures. Martin and Halverson (1983) tested this experimentally: children were shown pictures of males and females performing schema-consistent activities (e.g. a boy playing with a truck; a girl baking) and schema-inconsistent activities (e.g. a girl sawing wood; a boy playing with a doll). When tested a week later, children systematically misremembered the schema-inconsistent pictures — they recalled the girl sawing as a boy sawing, and the boy with a doll as a girl with a doll. This distortion preserves schema integrity at the cost of accuracy — it is the same cognitive mechanism as the broader schema-consistent memory bias documented in social cognition research.
Key Distinctions from Kohlberg
Gender schema theory differs from Kohlberg's theory in two crucial ways. First, schemas form at approximately 2–3 years of age, before gender constancy is achieved, meaning gender-typed behaviour can be explained without requiring constancy. Second, children are portrayed as active constructors of gender knowledge — they do not merely receive reinforcement or observe models, but actively seek and process gender-relevant information in ways that are guided by their existing schemas.
