Ethological Explanations of Aggression
Ethology — the scientific study of animal behaviour in natural environments, pioneered by Konrad Lorenz and Niko Tinbergen — proposes that aggression is an innate, adaptive behaviour shaped by natural selection. The ethological approach emphasises that aggression has evolved functions, species-specific patterns, and regulatory mechanisms that serve the organism's survival and reproductive interests.
Lorenz's Hydraulic Model
Konrad Lorenz (1966) proposed an influential but now largely discredited hydraulic model of aggression in his book On Aggression. In this model, aggressive energy is continuously generated within the organism (like water filling a tank), building up until it is released — either spontaneously (vacuum activities) or triggered by a specific sign stimulus (releaser). The loser signals submission through appeasement gestures (turning away, exposing the throat, cowering) — and crucially, in most species these gestures are remarkably effective at inhibiting further attack. Tinbergen observed that this ritualism prevents the escalation of intraspecies conflict to lethal levels — aggressive drives are aroused but appeasement mechanisms redirect them. Lorenz argued that humans, unlike other species with effective appeasement gestures (e.g. wolves' throat exposure), lack adequate biological appeasement mechanisms, and that the development of weapons has outpaced our inhibitory adaptations — making human aggression uniquely dangerous.
Tinbergen's Four Questions
Tinbergen (1963) proposed that any behaviour should be analysed at four levels: (1) Causation — what mechanisms trigger it? (2) Ontogeny — how does it develop across the lifespan? (3) Function — what is its adaptive value? (4) Evolution — what is its phylogenetic history? Applied to aggression, function answers: territorial defence, mate competition, dominance hierarchies, offspring protection — all of which increase reproductive fitness.
