Physical Attractiveness and the Matching Hypothesis
Physical attractiveness plays a significant role in initial attraction and partner selection — consistently one of the strongest predictors of initial liking in experimental and naturalistic settings. Understanding why attractiveness matters, how attractiveness judgements are made, and whether people select partners of similar attractiveness to themselves are central questions in the psychology of relationships.
Why Does Physical Attractiveness Matter?
Physical attractiveness influences interpersonal judgements through two main mechanisms:
The halo effect — a well-documented cognitive bias — is the tendency to attribute positive characteristics to physically attractive people across unrelated domains. Dion, Berscheid, and Walster (1972) demonstrated this in a classic study: participants rated attractive people as more socially desirable, happier, and likely to have better outcomes in life. Physically attractive people are perceived as kinder, more intelligent, more competent, and more socially skilled than less attractive people — even by individuals who have never met them. The halo effect means that physical attractiveness shapes initial impressions profoundly and influences hiring decisions, legal judgements, teaching evaluations, and clinical diagnoses as well as romantic attraction.
From an evolutionary perspective, attractiveness preferences reflect the operation of psychological mechanisms shaped by natural selection to prefer mates with high reproductive value and genetic quality. Physical features associated with attractiveness — bilateral symmetry (indicating developmental stability), clear skin and lustrous hair (indicating health), appropriate body weight and specific body proportions — serve as honest signals of genetic quality and current health status. Preferences for these features should therefore have been selected for because they guided ancestors towards higher-quality mates.
The Computer Dance Study (Walster et al., 1966)
In one of the most cited early studies of physical attractiveness, Walster and colleagues assigned 752 first-year students to blind date partners ostensibly matched on various criteria, but actually assigned randomly. After spending the evening together, participants were asked how much they liked their date and whether they would like to see them again. The only significant predictor of liking was the partner's physical attractiveness — as rated by the researchers. Personality, intelligence, social skills, and other characteristics did not predict liking at this early stage. This study emphasised the overriding importance of physical attractiveness in initial attraction, suggesting that 'what is beautiful is good' in the context of first meetings.
The Matching Hypothesis
Walster et al. proposed the matching hypothesis from the observation that, despite the general preference for attractive partners, people do not exclusively pair with the most attractive available partners. They argued that people balance their desire for an attractive partner against the fear of rejection — the anticipated humiliation of being refused by someone substantially more attractive. This trade-off leads to the prediction that people will tend to select romantic partners of similar physical attractiveness to themselves.
The matching hypothesis predicts:

Research Evidence
Murstein (1972) provided early support: he asked judges to rate the physical attractiveness of photographs of 99 engaged or 'going steady' couples and 99 randomly paired male-female couples. Actual couples were rated as significantly more similar in attractiveness than randomly paired controls — consistent with the matching hypothesis.
Feingold's (1988) meta-analysis of 17 studies found a moderate positive correlation between partners' attractiveness ratings (r = +0.49 for dating couples; somewhat lower for friends and casual acquaintances) — supporting matching in established relationships. However, the effect may be stronger in self-selected committed couples than in early-stage or casual relationships.
Critiques of the hypothesis: the effect depends on how attractiveness is measured (self-rated vs judge-rated; photographs vs in-person) and may be confounded by the tendency for people who interact more (and thus have more opportunity to become attracted) to be physically proximate — itself correlated with social class and neighbourhood, which may correlate with attractiveness. The 'fear of rejection' mechanism has not been directly tested — alternative mechanisms (mere exposure, similarity as a predictor of relationship success independent of attractiveness) may also account for the matching effect.
